The Lock
Despite numerous tests carried out on the table (including this one), there has not been a concise explanation, but several possibilities as to its meaning. Is it a rape or a love scene?
A sketch of small size (26 x 32.5 cm) of this painting was sold at Christie's December 17, 1999 for the sum of £ 5 281 500, Lot No. 95, about 8 080 000 €.
The original lock was obtained by the Louvre in 1974. It was designed by the painter as for the Adoration of the Shepherds (available at the Louvre in 1988 by Mr. and Mrs. Roberto Polo). Are opposed and love the sacred and profane love.
