I really liked the name Constantinople, but im sure there was a very good reason for renaming it. No matter what name it is a beautiful place and I believe the people are as nice as they are beautiful.
Byzantium is the first known name of the city. In 667 B.C., this Doric colony was founded by settlers from the city-state of Megara, and they named the colony after their king Byzas.[9] After Roman emperor Constantine I (Constantine the Great) made the city the new eastern capital of the Roman Empire on 11 May 330, the city became widely known as Constantinopolis (the Latinised form of "Κωνσταντινούπολις" [Kōnstantinoúpolis] which means the "City of Constantine" in Greek) SOURCE: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instanbul
The name comes from the Greek word Bosporos (Βόσπορος).[1] Its etymology is from bous (βοῦς: ox)[2] and poros (πόρος: "means of passing a river, ford, ferry",[3] thus meaning "oxen passage". The similar Ancient Greek word for "passage, strait" is porthmos (πορθμός).[4] The Greeks analysed it as "ox-ford" or "shallow sea ox passage"[1] and associated it with the myth of Io's travels after Zeus turned her into an heifer for her protection.[5] It has also been thought to be a Thracian form of Phôsphoros (Φωσφόρος), "light-bearing", an epithet of the goddess Hecate.
