The castle was the first time in the 12th Century as a swan stone castle mentioned as the seat of the Noble Schwangau. In the following centuries, changed its owners, the castle ruin, was rebuilt and destroyed again. In acquired in 1832 King Maximilian II (then Crown Prince Maximilian) the ruins and left them in the style of the Neo-Gothic rebuild (until 1837)
