The Battle of Marignano (Marignano in Italy today Melegnano town 16 km southeast of Milan), took place on 13 and September 14, 1515 (Thursday and Friday) and opposed François 1er of France and its allies to Venetians Swiss defending the Milanese.
The battle of Marignan is an episode of the Italian wars begun by Charles VIII in 1494 to control the Duchy of Milan.
This is the first victory of the young king Francis 1er during the first year of his reign, acquired at a high price: 16 000 dead in a few days. It will give rise to an intense propaganda developed by the monarchy to justify the expedition.
