During the wars of the Rinascimento for predominance in Italy, the French, faced with an offensive against the Holy League, fighting with the Allied artillery of the Duke of Ferrara Spanish troops April 11, 1512 at the Battle of Ravenna . But Gaston de Foix died during this battle, however, and Jacques II de Chabannes, his successor, not his general talents. Threatened north, the French were forced to retreat to Piedmont.

Context:
Worried about the progress of Louis XII, Pope Julius II, his intention to expel the French from Italy. On February 24, 1510, he lifted the excommunication of Venice and the Papal troops assisting the Venetians to regain lost ground in French.

In May 1511, Louis XII takes Bologna and convene a council at Pisa for deposing the pope. Julius II response by his bull Sacrosanctæ in excommunicating members of the Council of Pisa. Then October 5, 1511, he formed the Holy League with Spain, the Republic of Venice, England and the Swiss cantons against France.

In early 1512 the allied armies resumed march on Brescia and Bologna. But the French troops, commanded by Gaston de Foix, manage to raise the siege of Bologna, and forced the troops of the Holy League to evacuate Brescia.
