An Carraig Aonar; literally The Lonely Rock. Known to generations of Irish emigrants as Ireland's teardrop, it was the last part of Ireland visible to people shipping out of Queenstown (now Cobh, pronounced COVE not COB H!!!!!) in Cork Harbour to the new world. In the Irish Lighthouse Service the tower is known as 'Kavanaghs Tower' in memory of the man who supervised its construction and who died within days of its completion. Google Fastnet Yacht Race.
