Wallpaper Description:
Valley of Ksour, between Matmata and Tataouine, Governorship of Tataouine, Tunisia (33°00' NR - 10°15' E).
The ksour or ksar indicate typical Berber fortresses of the south of Tunisia. Folded up on a court interior and 10 m protected by a sometimes high enclosing wall, they were built on the reliefs to protect itself from the attackers. They testify indeed to the long resistance to Berber to the Arab invasion between VIIe and XIIe century. The majority of these ksour were collective attics for the storage in full safety of cereals, oil and fodder. This is why these fortresses are divided into ghorfas, cells from 4 to 5 m of height depth and 2 m superimposed on several stages. Others were used as dwellings before these sites were forsaken with the profit of the plains once the calm income in the valley. Vacuums, these “attics of the peaks” still dominate the landscape, recalling by their size that a wetter climate formerly made it possible to nourish an important population in an area which is today with the fringes of the desert of the Sahara.
