Marabouts in Jebel Krefane, gouvernoratde Tozeur, Tunisia (33°55' NR - 8°08' E). Ifriqiya (Tunisia) was conquered by the Arabs as of the end of VIIe century. But the Arabisation and Islamization, rather slow at the beginning, sontaccélérées only starting from XIe century. As in the other territories tardily Islamized, in fact the Sufism was established. In Africa, this current takes support on maraboutisme, worship of the saints which becomes an essential component of the popular devotion: tombs with cupolas (or marabouts) strew cities and campaigns. The marabout returns at the origin to the murabit, warlike monk alive in a strengthened convent (or ribat). Then it comes from there to designate a character who was illustrated by his piety, his charity, its religious science or its gifts of healer. The term also applies to its mausoleum, place of pilgrimage where the followers come to venerate it by sung and danced ceremonies.
