The figures are found throughout the world in a different form, but they are most often associated with Egypt, featuring the most famous example in the form of the Great Sphinx of Giza. Miraculously, the statue was carved from one piece of stone monoliths, and in 240 feet long, 20 feet wide and 66 ft high, was regarded as the greatest monument of its kind in the world. Despite his reputation as one of the most famous ancient monuments, there is still very little known about the Great Sphinx of Giza. Ancient Egyptians may have little understanding of why the statue was built, but when, how, and by that is still shrouded in mystery. Pharaoh Khafra is a prime suspect, which would date the structure back to about 2500 BC
