St. Canisius (St. Canice), after which the city was named, was built in the 7th Century on the site of the present city of Saint-Cainnech Cathedral. In the 12th Century was built a castle here. 1202 Kilkenny was bishop.

As in 1366, the so-called Kilkenny Statutes adopted, the British and Irish forbidden to "mix". 1391, the Butler family, the castle, and at Kilkenny experienced English as a loyal city flourished.

From 1642 to 1648 held here, the Parliament of the Anglo-Irish confederation and thus was the then capital of Kilkenny Ireland. In the 19th Century saw Kilkenny because the best road connections to Dublin and Cork, an economic upswing. In the 20th Century the town became a center for arts and crafts.
