The Mont Saint-Michel is a rocky island in the English Channel at the mouth of the Couesnon about a kilometer off the coast of Normandy in the Wadden Sea, near Avranches, and the border of Brittany.
The buildings without some 46-meter-high island is famous for her at the Benedictine monastery was built, which is only about 55,000 m² (approx size 830 m) dominated large island. It is one of the best examples of French Norman architecture (beginning around 1022) and a fortified abbey. Mont-Saint-Michel is also a city (département of Manche, Basse-Normandie), already 708 have been founded in the Middle Ages by pilgrims and today lives on tourism.
