Wallpaper Description:
These 12-inch motars were manufactured at the Watervliet Arsenal, Watervliet, NY in 1901. The carriages are the Model 1896 and were manufactured by the American Hoist & Derrick Company, St. Paul, Minnesota.
In August 1902, 8 mortars were mounted at Fort Laidley (De Soto). In 1917, 4 of the 8 mortars were dismounted and shipped to Fort Rosecrans, San Diego, California for coastal defense. After WWI many weapons such as these were melted down to be converted to other types of weaponry. Today Fort De Soto, has the only 12-inch Saecoast Mortars, Models 1890-M1 in the continental United States. The only other ones in the world are on the island of Corregidor in the Philippines.

Length, muzzle to breech face: 141 inches
Length of bore in calibers: 10
Maximum diameter of chamber: 12.5 inches
Total weight w/carriage: 138,000 pounds
