~Battery Charles Mellon~Egmont Key~Florida~Fort Dade~
Wallpaper Description:
~1898~Battery Charles Mellon~ Fort Dade~ This structure was built in response to the Spanish-American War to mount two 8-inch guns. The structure was completely rebuilt in 1901 to mount two 3-inch rapid fire guns. These light weight guns would protect the mine fields in the North channel. The guns were declared obsolete in 1920 and removed. The U.S. Navy built a wooden "Harbor Entrance Post" tower over the center gun enplacement in 1943. This is one of the smaller batteries on the island. It's really neat, with 4 sets of stairs that bring you to the top of the fort were the guns use to be mounted. From the top you can see the beautiful blue of the sea sparkling up at you. There are many rooms below, that connect together, and have a huge hole cut out of the wall to pass the ammunition to the next room quicker for faster firing.
