The Town Hall in Zurich is among the most significant cultural and architectural landmarks of the city. It is a symbol of power and prosperity of its inhabitants.
This is that very building where there were the meetings of those who shaped the future of Zurich. It is worth seeing the Town Hall inside, and though it looks rather modest outside, one can observe amazing painted ceilings and unique elements of the interior.
The Zurich Rathaus was built in the 1694-1698 years on the place of its two wooden predecessors. It is located on the bank of the Limmat river near the Grossmunster church, on that part of the city, which is known as Old Town.
Starting from 1803, the Town Hall belongs to the Zurich canton. The last renovations were done in 1974. Thanks to the elevator system and lifting platform in the hall, the Town Hall is now accessible to the public since 2009
