London: Big Ben (Lecture below - for Username-Scotsman and anyone who wants to read it)
Wallpaper Description:
LECTURE FOR Username-Scotsman and for everyone who wants information on the Big Ben:
This IS the Big Ben. Its OFFICIAL NAME was The Clock Tower, and RECENTLY was officially RENAMED The Elizabeth Tower in honour of Queen Elizabeth ll's 60-year reign. It is situated at the north end of the Palace of Westminster.
On the south end of the same Palace, the place for Parliament, stands The Victoria Tower, RENAMED in honour of Queen Victoria FROM its original name The King's Tower, which was so-named in honour of King James in the 17th century.
So at two ends of the Palace of Westminster stand two towers, one named The Victoria Tower (formerly The King's Tower) and The Elizabeth Tower (formerly The Clock Tower/coloquially the Big Ben).
ONLY IN Queen Victoria's reign was the The Clock Tower/Big Ben also named St. Stephen's Tower UNOFFICIALLY by personages in Parliament. This had a connection with news from the direction of the Big Ben crossing into the courtyard to the Victoria Tower, PASSING BY the shortest and THIRD tower located in the Palace of Westminster. It was also called St. Stephen's Tower, and is in fact THE ORIGINAL St. Stephen's Tower. It is located in the MIDDLE of the Palace property. In those days (of Queen Victoria's reign), calling the Big Ben/The Clock Tower/The Elizabeth Tower "St. Stephen's Tower" started as a joke which stuck, but there was NEVER an official renaming of the Big Ben/The Clock Tower as "St. Stephen's Tower". The REAL St. Stephen's Tower, is a very short one, AND is ONLY YARDS AWAY from the Big Ben/The Clock Tower/The Elizabeth Tower.
Though The Clock Tower has been renamed The Elizabeth Tower, IT WILL ALWAYS BE CALLED the Big Ben by the common folk on the street, as it has never been its official name, only a colloquial one. Its BELL, with its sound was fondly personified by the people, and then much later the name CAME TO refer to the ENTIRE TOWER. To sum it up:
1. It is STILL the Big Ben, though its former official name The Clock Tower has been OFFICIALLY changed to The Elizabeth Tower.
2. Big Ben/The Clock Tower has NEVER been OFFICIALLY CALLED St. Stephen's Tower.
3. The REAL St. Stephen's Tower in the same premises had been a different tower altogether.
Okay, username-Scotsman? I deleted your angry comment which said, "For the 235th time: IT'S CALLED THE ST. STEPHEN'S TOWER and NOT the BIG BEN!!!" because it was misinforming everyone. Username-Scotsman, YOU ARE WRONG!
