From 1110 to the lords of the castle Stilfes fief was given. 1470 Duke Sigmund sold the fief to the Teutonic Knights. Until the dissolution of the Order of 1813, the castle remained in possession of the Order and was further expanded and intensified military. From 1813 acquired the Princes of Thurn and Taxis, control of the castle.
Reifenstein was captured in its history, and never destroyed and is therefore regarded today as the best-preserved fortress in South Tyrol.
