This gorgeously impressionistic image of a "future city" fulfills my own personal criteria for creating dreams of the future. Simply put, the artist incorporated Nature into his/her vision, rather than shove it out of the way. Many if not most scenarios of future cities appear hugely oppressive as they pile on acres of concrete and steel and shadowy skyscrapers in an uninterrupted march to the horizon. Not a blade of grass can be seen. But this serenely pastel vision makes so much room for Mother Nature to show her colors that the picture hardly seems futuristic in the most popular sense of the word. This is a sunset dream of rivers and glass and hills and clouds and lights, where you can smell the cool evening mist and hear the sound of gently rhythmic bossa nova music floating out of an open-air night club on a summer night. This is the kind of future I'd like to live in.
