Already in 1234, on the initiative of Hermann von Balk erected a fortress of the Teutonic Knights. Then, from the end of the thirteenth century to the 30s Fourteenth century castle was built in brick in the Gothic style, which was one of the strongest fortresses on the southern fringe of the monastic state in Prussia. Since 1251 was the seat of the Teutonic Knights . After the Battle of Grunwald castle Malbork captured returning from the Polish army on September 21, 1410 By Jan Dlugosz Wladyslaw II Jagiello gave the lease of the castle Radzyń Jasiek Falcon (John Sokol Lamberk, commander of the Czech troops fighting on the Polish side), and the castle remained Polish-Czech crew. However, after the Peace of Thorn in 1411, the castle was returned to the Teutonic Knights. After Thirteen Years' War became a part of Royal Prussia, already from 1454, the seat of Polish mayors. During the Polish-Swedish war in 1628 was seriously damaged during the siege by the Swedes, and then abandoned.
