The old and the new - east coast, england, flamborough, headland, lighthouse, yorkshire
Flag This Wallpaper Add to Favorites Enlarge Wallpaper
Wallpaper Description:
The modern Flamborough lighthouse is in the left foreground, while in the distance, to the right, is the 'Old Beacon' light tower, thought to be the oldest surviving lighthouse in England, built around 1670; a brushwood fire in the top provided the beacon.
The 'modern' structure was built in 1806, converted from oil to electricity in 1940, and is still in use (fully automated) today, warning ships away from the treacherous rocks of Flamborough Head.
