The Old Lighthouse Morecambe, Lancashire

The Old Lighthouse Morecambe, Lancashire - lighthouse, architecture, photograph, art deco
Flag This WallpaperAdd to FavoritesEnlarge Wallpaper
Wallpaper Description:
The old lighthouse on Morecambe's stone pier dates from 1855 and formerly guided railroad ferries sailing between Morecambe and Ireland. The building immediately behind the lighthouse has been converted in a cafe or tea-room.

Morecambe itself only really dates from the middle of the 19th century, when the railway arrived and a harbour was built. Both the original station and the harbour have now gone, and after the town's two seaside piers were demolished in the second half of the 20th century following storm damage and a fire the town went into decline.

One of the outstanding buildings that remains is the Midland Hotel, seen in the background. This is an important art deco luxury hotel situated on the seafront. It still contains interior design and art pieces by the renowned artist Eric Gill. It underwent a £7m restoration and re-opened for business in June 2008.
