Wemyss Bay railway Station was designed by James Miller in 1903 for the Caledonian Railway and is remarkable in its use of glass and steel curves. The station is noted for its architectural qualities and is one of Scotland's finest railway buildings and is now Category A Listed. This station is a fantastic example of the ‘good old Victorian days’ of buildings that were eye gloriously beautiful. The station has been recently refurbished and it holds the charm of what it was like way back then. it’s a terminus where rail passengers alight from the train and walk down the wide wooden concourse to the Isle of Bute ferry. Old posters align the walls advertising the sights to see in Rothesay on the other side of the Firth.
The ceiling is glass which lets in the sunshine and gives a real feeling of open space. The original ticket office is in the centre of the station where you can buy your tickets. There is a quaint café and bar, and a book shop, and that in itself brings back memories of old, which also houses pictures of the old ships and harbours. Maps are there so you can see where to go on your journey. This a lovely and well decorated station with flowers in large tiered tubs making it feel warm and friendly.
