Cape May is located at the extreme southern tip of the Cape May peninsula between the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean and is the southernmost city in New Jersey. The town was founded in 1620 by the Dutch Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, and is thus one of the oldest settlements of European settlers on the east coast of the United States. Already since the 18th Century, Cape May is among wealthy citizens of New York and Philadelphia a reputation as an attractive summer resort. Above all, it is in Cape May is proud of the official motto of The Nation's Oldest Seashore Resort. Since its beginnings as a summer resort began also in Cape May to build their own houses, many of which have been preserved (see below).
